Treatments

Following a thorough assessment, Emma uses her expertise and extensive knowledge of the latest evidence-based practice to determine the appropriate treatments that will reduce pain, promote the healing process and start the road to recovery.

Manual Therapies

These are a combination of hands-on techniques that are used to alleviate pain, reduce muscular tension, reduce joint stiffness and restriction. These can restore normal muscle function and improve posture and mobility whilst also providing physiological and psychological benefits.

E.G.

  • Massage
  • myofascial release
  • Joint mobilisations and manipulations (spinal and peripheral)

Electrotherapy Modalities

These are gentle and non-invasive modalities that work by using electrical currents, mechanical or light impulses to stimulate nerve, bone or soft tissue fibres (muscle, tendon, ligament). Different modalities are effective on different tissue types (muscle, tendon, ligament, bone, nerves, circulatory system) and are chosen as part of the treatment process for their benefits in enhancing the healing process. They are used in conjunction with manual therapies and exercise prescription.

The main benefits are:

  • Initiate or enhance healing process, especially in delayed healing
  • Provide pain relief
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Increase circulation
  • Benefit arthritic conditions
  • Enhance muscle function and activation
  • Assist and promote wound healing
  • Promote collagen formation and organizations

Therapies available are:

  • LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation)
  • Ultrasound
  • Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES)
  • Functional electrical stimulation
  • Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) – for pain relief
  • Pulsed magnetic therapy (PMFT)
  • Kinesiotaping

Exercise prescription and Rehabilitation Progression

Individually prescribed exercise programmes are designed to retrain postural and biomechanical awareness and imbalances, and also improve the strength, proprioception, balance, flexibility and cardiorespiratory fitness of the patient. Rehabilitation programmes are paramount in completing the healing process.

They are designed to assist the patient to return to their normal activities and sports with a guided, safe and structured approach to exercise and activity progression and to address any pre-existing weakness and issues, avoiding any compensatory techniques and re-injury.
